The Story of how I claimed my poetic voice…
Hi, I’m Susan Frybort and I’m so honoured and excited to be presenting this poetry writing and healing course to you at this special time. There was a time in my life where I felt myself separated from the one true solace I now treasure most. Writing poetry. While I was sure to find comfort and connection reading poetry written by other poets, I was unable to expose my own poetry to the world, or even access what I was genuinely feeling. For years, I was happy to read and circulate what other people had written, yet felt a longing to share something personal and meaningful stirring within. As a child, I had been deeply drawn to poetry and found myself captivated by rhythm, rhyme and sequence. I continued to study poetry throughout my life and exercised my writing privately. As a trauma survivor, I turned to poetry writing as a means of working through my multi-layered material and cleaning out past wounds. The day came when I finally felt ready and began sharing poetry after joining a therapeutic writing support group. I received the encouragement and positive feedback I longed to hear and went on to submit pieces, and subsequently had several poems published. But even after these brave steps, something else remained in the way and I was still unable to reference my feelings conclusively. I understood there was more work to be done. Poetry continued to be my provider and place of shelter as I continued to work through more of my emotional holdings and traumatic wounding. It actually wasn’t until after I published the poem titled, Empathy, that I began my most intimate journey— directly into my Heart— to unearth the many blocks and fears that were preventing my deepest creativity from flowing liberally. And when I finally emerged, I was writing from my soul with an empowered and authentic voice.
I couldn’t stop the flow that resulted afterwards. Once I tapped into this abounding well within, I activated more memories and buried bodily and emotional material. As I continued excavating, I was simultaneously sharpening my authentic voice. More importantly, I was wonderfully gaining true confidence! As a writer and poet, I understand the journey and the importance of protecting and nurturing the creative process. That’s one of the many special reasons why I wanted to design this compelling course to share with you. My hope is you will find the personal experiences I share, along with the exclusive prompts and exercises, activate and lead you to more personal discovery and connection. All the set-backs and patterns that once held you captive as a writer and hindered growth and healing, will remarkably and compassionately bring you into the light of your powerful voice. I hope you join me on this amazing path!

Writing since she was a child, her poems and affirmations are a tapestry of wisdom and compassion that soften the heart’s edges, calling us home. Previously published in Elephant Journal, Vivid Life, and Women for One, Susan also has published two inspiring books. Her first, the poetry collection Hope is a Traveler, was published in 2015 to rave reviews. Hope engages the senses through imagery and metaphor. Her second book, Open Passages, is a special collection of meditations and affirmations that offer soothing balm to the weary soul. In addition, Susan’s poetry has been featured in bestsellers, An Uncommon Bond and Grounded Spirituality, both written by her husband, Jeff Brown. She is a nature enthusiast and her interests include astronomy, art, photography, and old books. Today, Susan has settled in Canada and continues to write.
“What would happen if you walked to your edges and peered into the uncharted streams of your personal existence? We understand how everyone is afraid of something and that hesitation becomes a barricade placed before our creative energy. We want to somehow use this crucial point as a catapult to expression. I was always fearful of exposing my work in the beginning. Forever going to the trouble of hiding or evading the very thing that wished to set me free and enable me to heal and develop. Eventually I realized all my heart pounding fears would inevitably be swallowed up by the overwhelming misfortune of remaining in a place of little or no growth, and so I used that restless and anxious energy to propel me forward and seize more from life. To write how I wanted. To be unapologetic about my style. To be daring and brave and share what I know and to trust there is richness there. The best thing about your poetic voice is that it belongs to you and was birthed through your individual creative process.”
